May Pilgrimage Preparation meeting

During the May pilgrimage preparation meeting we did a sweep on the entire Saints and Mystics pilgrimage.  During the presentation we had a look at a number of official video clips from the WYD website.  The information about the pilgrimage, include links to the videos, is contained in the PowerPoint slide show which you can download below.  Each pilgrim was also give a pilgrimage overview document that has a greater explanation of the pilgrimage than the slides.  Both documents can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.  Most of the information will also appear on the blog, click here for the blog

Pilgrimage Options for Madrid 2011

There will be one Diocese of Broken Bay WYD11 pilgrimage with three sources of funding:

1. Internship – funded by the Diocese

2. Year 11 School group – funded by the Catholic Schools Office

3. Self funded – pilgrims arrange their own funding or sponsorship.

4. Broken Bay Short option - this trip included WYD week in Madrid and the post WYD retreat in Dublin Ireland.  This option will allow pilgrims to take only two weeks off work, university or might suit parents looking for a shorter time away from their children.

The Diocese of Broken Bay WYD11 pilgrimage will involve five stages:

1. Pre pilgrimage

  • Fly out from Sydney to Madrid 5th August 2011.

  • Travel through Northern Spain visiting towns connected with a variety of Saints and Mystics such as Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, St Dominic and parts of the famous El Camino de Compestela (the way of St James).

  • Travel will be via air-conditioned coach

  • Breakfasts and most dinners.

  • Accommodation will include one or two nights in towns along the way.

2. Days in the Diocese - 12-15 August - the Diocese of Toledo Spain.

  • Day One - A Parish Day in the Diocese of Toledo, just south of Madrid.

  • Day Two - visit the region of the parish.

  • Day Three - National Feast day celebrations including a celebration with 15 000 pilgrims.

3. WYD week - 16-21 August - this will be organised by the Spanish WYD Committee

(the Broken Bay shorter pilgrimage will join the rest of the group on Monday 16th August)

  • University accommodation including Breakfast lunch and dinner.

  • Arrival with the Pope and an estimated 1.5 million pilgrims.

  • The Pilgrim walk and Saturday night Vigil and sleep out.

4. Post WYD retreat - 22-25 August - a 3 day post WYD retreat in Dublin Ireland.

5. Private travel – after the post WYD retreat pilgrims can return directly home or may engage in private travel. This private travel should be organised by the individual pilgrim.

Harvest Tours

Harvest Pilgrimages have been appointed as the tour operator for WYD11.  They have many years of experience with WYD, beginning with the first group to WYD Poland in 1991.

European World Youth Days

An overseas World Youth Day is unlike anything that you have seen before.  The crowd of over 1 million young people can change the life the city for the week.  A European WYD is very different to other WYD's especially WYD08 in Sydney.  Whilst the crowd of 200,000 at WYD08 was an exciting experience for all, nothing can prepare you for the estimated 2 million people that will arrive in Spain for WYD11.

Check out the images of other WYD's to see what an overseas WYD is really like.
